How to Import Jute Products from India: A First-Time Buyer's Guide

India produces the majority of the world's jute, and West Bengal is its heartland. If you're an importer planning your first order, here is the practical path from enquiry to delivery.

Step 1 — Verify the exporter

Every legitimate Indian exporter holds an IEC (Importer-Exporter Code) from DGFT and a GST registration. Both can be verified free on official Government of India portals in under two minutes. A trustworthy supplier will publish these numbers openly — treat hesitation as a red flag.

Step 2 — Specify, sample, then order

  • Share exact specifications: size, material weight (GSM), print, handle type, quantity.
  • Always approve a physical or photo/video sample before confirming.
  • Discuss MOQ — serious exporters keep first trial orders flexible.

Step 3 — Understand shipping & documents

Shipments from Bengal move via Kolkata by sea (economical for volume) or air (faster for samples and small lots). Your exporter should provide the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading / airway bill and certificate of origin as standard.

Step 4 — Payment terms

Common patterns for new relationships: an advance with balance against shipment documents. Build trust in small steps — a good supplier will grow with you order by order.
